Ventriloquism became popular as a performance art in the 19th century.  Before that it was considered a religious practice, the word Ventriloquism comes from the latin and means, speak from the stomach.  At the time is was thought that it was voices fo the dead that had taken up residence in the stomach of the ventriloquist.

There have been many horror movies with ventriloquist dummies as the murders. There have been movies that weren't very popular like one called Dead Silence, and another one called Magic with Anthony Hopkins.  There was another ventriloquist dummie in the movie called Poltergeist

Jeff Dunham is a modern ventriloquist that has been doing it for many years.  He uses a variety of dummies in his act including Peanut, Walter, Achmed, and Jose Jalapeno (on a stick).  He has made a great name for himself doing this, and has won "funniest Male Stand-Up Comic" at the American comedy awards two times.  He has also had many special shows on Comedy Central.

Another popular person that has just come on the scene as a ventriloquist is a guy by the name of Terry Fator.  He won the NBC reality show "America's Got Talent" in 2007 as a ventriloquist act, he impersonates famous singers with his dummie.  He has said that he wants to bring back the popularity of ventriloquism in todays age.

There are many places you can buy ventriloquist dummies, and also parts for them.  The best place to find them is to look online for a place that is close to you, or a place that can ship one to you.  You can always look in the local paper or on ebay or something for used ones too.  One bad thing about buying them online and are serious about it are that they usually already have a personality attached to them.  If you go to a place that makes and sells them new you get a blank slate and get to paint it anyway you want.  There are clothes you can buy for them too, and make it any personality you want.
